NO GOOD NEWS for Kenyans …… drinking hours EXTENSION shot down in Parliament

Wednesday, the 28th of November 2012 - An amendment proposed by Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi to extend drinking hours in the country has been defeated in parliament.

Kapondi’s amendment would have increased the drinking hours to 14. He charged that the controversial ‘Mututho Law’ (named for Naivasha MP John Mututho) was proving to be a difficult adjustment to make for bar owners and also hurting their businesses.

Mututho called out Kapondi for suggesting the amendment;

“Surely, Hon Kapondi, as a father, as a legislator, you cannot sit here and allow Kenyans to die in bigger numbers than they are already dying because of alcoholism,” he said.

“We have an alcohol problem in this country. A
 working nation cannot be based on a drinking culture,” he said.

“It can never be good for the economy,” he stated.

Nominated MP Millie Odhiambo opposed the amendment saying commercial interest comes second to the public good.

The amendment was ultimately defeated.
